Holidays with the Fronhofer Tool Family

Jim Graham with Dijeridoo          The Christmas season is upon us once again. This is a source of great anxiety for many people. Parking lots are overflowing, there are way too many people in the stores, and everyone seems stressed out. You worry about spending too much money, and you worry about not spending enough. Then you find out there’s a six month waiting list for most of the toys your kids want. You worry about over-eating but this might be the only time of the year you are offered things called “Lemon Lush” or “Whoopee Pies” or triple layer “Red Velvet Cake”.

There have been times when I was Christmas shopping and have been extremely stressed. I would walk in a store that was playing a good Christmas song, like “Silent Night” or “White Christmas”, and I would feel the tension leave my body instantly. All of a sudden I would develop an “attitude of gratitude” and instead of focusing on negative things I would start noticing the excitement in children’s eyes as they walked past. I would get a big blast of “Christmas Spirit” and feel a tremendous love for those near and dear to me and become very thankful for the many blessings in my life.  When I was a child in Newport, Vermont, they would light up Main Street with Christmas lights and decorations. The stores would all stay open late and they would pump Christmas music out through loudspeakers up and down the whole street. I remember snowflakes falling and the beauty and excitement of it all.

I think the Christmas music that was recorded in the 50’s and 60’s by artists like Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, and Frank Sinatra are still, to this day, the best. A lot of artists over the years have recorded Christmas songs but, in my opinion, I would rather hear Nat King Cole’s version instead of John Bon Jovi or the ‘Dixie Chicks’. I also heard that ‘N’ Sync and Christina Aguilera have done some Christmas songs. I won’t be buying these.

Some people might like hearing “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” or Alvin and the Chipmunks but I truly prefer the traditional classics. They always seem to warm my heart and bring a smile to my face.
